The TNIV isn't the only gender accurate bible translation. But it has received a lot of vehement opposition. Consequently, there are many unanswered and poorly answered questions in readers' minds about the newest revision of this standard and well accepted bible translation.
I hadn't paid much attention to comments about the TNIV, comments that included denunciations and false information, until a few days ago, thinking it was the usual opposition to new translations by people who didn't really understand translation issues very well, or had other axes to grind and felt opposing the new version would help.
But, I came across a quote from one of the TNIV's most insistent opponents, who said,
A Bible that takes 3600+ masculine oriented terms out of the Bible takes a lot of manhood out of the Bible--it's not as much a man's Bible anymore.
And, a Pastor Dorcas George wrote on her blog,
How I wish people would stop calling this Bible translation "gender neutral." I have one, and I assure you it is no such thing.
Then I discovered there is now a web site for promoting opposition to the TNIV.
Wait a minute, I thought, here I am, a blogging enthusiast, and I can create a site for accurate, non inflammatory information about not only this translation, but about other gender accurate translations, from people who are well credentialed and know what they are talking about when they talk bible translation.
The more I thought about it, and it didn't take long to convince me, the more I thought, why not? Why not create a blog site, and invite linguists, translators and other scholars who can explain the processes by which new translations are created, answer questions, and provide information and insight into the very important tasks they engage in.
So, here it is. I've invited, and will continue to invite, in addition to the above, people with varying backgrounds who have sincere questions and opinions about the TNIV and other gender accurate translations.
We will also be providing news about subjects related to bible translation and historical accounts of reactions to previous translations --and anything else that seems appropriate to the subject.
I'm not inviting debate about gender accurate translations or any others. I am inviting non-inflammatory comment by responsible individuals. Comments that do not meet that requirement will not be approved for posting.
Please read the disclaimer and copyright post (in the Category links in the sidebar).
Thank you for visiting this site. It is here to provide resources for those who would like more and better information. And thank you to all who provide that information and comment here.
