Suitcase Books is a small company located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In fact, we are so small, our physical plant is a geranium. We are so small all our full time employees can chew the same stick of gum. Ugh! That sounds gross, doesn't it? But the way we do it, it's very sanitary.
We've been in business about fifteen years, we think. We don't know exactly when the business started because it evolved from Pat Gundry's writing career. She got tired of being mistreated by the Big Publisher she was dealing with at the time, got the rights back to her cookbook, bought the remaining 6,000 copies from the second printing, and sold them all. Rather than try to find another publisher for a cookbook with the name of its previous publisher in the title--especially when it had just received national publicity on TV and in a major magazine--she decided to reprint it herself.
After reprinting the first book, it occurred to her that she would probably do a better job of promoting her other books than their present publisher was doing. So she asked for the rights back for the two titles still at another house, buying all copies in stock to close the deal.
Over time, she learned how to do the publishing business right by doing it wrong several ways. Now she's reprinting additional titles of her own books and, so far, a reprint of a long out of print book about how to make a violin.
Pat Gundry runs the business, helped by outsourcing to capable people who do the designing, printing, and other good stuff for Suitcase Books. She would love to have two excellent and devoted employees who are good at everything she doesn't want to do and who need no instruction and no supervision. She suspects people like that would probably rather work for themselves than for her, but she's still looking and hoping.
The owner has one basic rule for the business: she has to be having a good time. Fortunately, she is only having a really good time when quality is absolutely the best and customers are having a good time too.
Suitcase Books is committed to providing top quality information, in an attractive and easily accessible form, to everyone on Earth who would like to have it.
Whenever possible, the owner would also like to make a profit in the process. Not the most important thing, but essential to staying in business.
